Wow, sessions like this make me fall in love all over again with being a Kansas City family photographer!  I have been sitting on this photography session and trying to narrow down the images.  See, this whole session started out as a mini-session to generate some family photographs for Christmas cards. Well, Winter happened and we ended up rescheduling in Spring.  And if this family was not so darn cute and playful I might have been able to stick to our plan of just a few images.

But what I learned about myself is that even if I stick to the shorter timeframe of a mini-session, my heart is so strongly tied to the lifestyle and candid images that result when kids are allowed to play, climb trees, run and pick flowers.  Their gallery will have “bloopers” and non-portraits.  They will have a range of expressions. They will have some portraits as well as images of them all playing Ring Around the Rosie.

When we started, mom told me that she was not worried about if the kids smiled or not.  She wanted photos of them being them. Oh, how I love this!  Their little girl, Eavan, did not smile much.  Or look at the camera much.  But she did pick flowers…and lots of them.  Her playing (all the while holding her flowers), climbing fences, sucking on honeysuckle, and running show childhood at it’s best.

Lian is so handsome!  He got to pick some locations for his portraits, and this fence was one of them.  This one below is a favorite of mine. His other favorite spot was in his climbing tree.  He also took on the big brother role and tried to get his sister involved.  Look at him squeeze her!

My goodness, Matt & Brie!  Your family!!  How darling you all are. This barn has been in Brie’s family for a long time, so the location and surrounding land is very special to them all.  My hope is that they will be able to cherish the images of their family playing in a place that holds their hearts for years to come.

These images look out over where their family home is, so that location is just as special as the barn.

Introducing Charlie, 12 days old!  He was wide awake, and alert for the majority of our time in their family home.   Since his parents teach and coach, they read a book to Charlie and made sure to include favorite sports attire.  The nursery is always one of my favorite spots to photograph a  new one, especially one as cute as Charlie’s.  They also spend the majority of time in their living room, so we wanted to highlight the everyday snuggles.

Congrats to your new family!

We got together on an incredibly steamy hot morning to help update Holly’s Yoga Business images.  She needed some photographs doing yoga with her incredibly cute and spunky daughter S and new headshots.  While we were at it, we also captured some great images during our “heat break” while S. and mom played bubbles and some quick family groupings.

How cute are my neighbors?  Looking back at our images from last Christmas, I am amazed at how much they have grown up in 11 short months.  The affection they have for each other is wonderful to see…in the hugs, kisses, hand holding, and play.

My hubby and I took our first trip together in 5 years and went to visit New Orleans and our dear friends Kara, John & their darling children Luca and John Xavier.  In between all the great music, food, and fun we had I was able to capture some family moments.  No posing: just play, exploration, tickles, hugs, favorite books & toys.  Oh, and some jumping on the bed.  What kid can resist that?  I also wanted to capture images for this sweet family to remember their home that they have put so much time and love into as they are moving to Florida for new opportunities and adventures.  Our first two days there were very rainy, so umbrellas were in order…complete with Luca’s yellow rain boots.   Notice the rain puddles that sent drops flying?

John Xavier was starting to scoot around, so the dog hair on his onsie is fitting.  I considered removing it in Photoshop, and then thought better of it.  It’s all part of the story…that one moment in time.

Luca didn’t want to get dressed.  That pout did not work in his efforts, but did make the parents happy as John has a photo with the same expression as a boy.  Once his shirt was on, we had some puzzle time in the dining room.  Johnny X wanted everything Luca touched, and wanted it in his mouth.  Luca was just happy to play and crawl (hug…) on mamma.   family lifestyle photography 3 family lifestyle photography 4

Reading time….and some music.

What a darling room these boys share.  See the “hey, I’m gonna pick my nose”?  Then see the ornery expression? Ya, mom and dad are gonna have their hands full.  I think one of my favorites from the room session was where Kara is sitting watching the play. Somehow, it sums up the feeling of being a mom to me personally.

I promised you bed jumping, so here it is….and hugs that make little brothers nervous.  And then giggles.  And more cuddles.

Kara and John, thank you so much for your hospitality.  Thank you for letting us invade your home and family time.  Thank you for the great meals, company, and insight on the best places to go.  We love you, and I couldn’t be happier to share these photographs with you.   It’s just a slice of your story, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Love Rebecca
