Country Engagement: At the Ranch with Kelly & John

May 15, 2018

It would be an understatement to say that wedding and engagement photography is important to Kelly and John.  Kelly contacted me even before she and John were engaged. She was guessing it was right around the corner, and she was right!  In getting to know them, it was easy to see the genuine affection and respect they hold for each other…and their love of “the Ranch”.  So, naturally, when we started brainstorming, we quickly decided on a country engagement session in their most favorite place:  Arrowhead Ranch.

It was well worth the 2.5-hour road trip to visit this amazing home away from home.  They go there to work on the land, to fish, and to hunt. (that’s a big one for them!).  The land is gorgeous and family history reveals itself all over.  For example, John’s grandfather planted the tall oak trees. The metal shed was actually the first building on the property.  And the road that leads to and from their favorite deer blind shows the family home they are working on fixing up.  Their family and friends proudly display the found deer sheds on the wall.  And Willy, their beloved puppy, loves the land as much as they do.

The View from their Favorite Deer Stand

On the way back from the deer blind that overlooked the property, I fell in love with the view of the house in the distance.   Portrait time!

The Road between the Family Home and Deer Blind

I loved this enormous section of Oak Trees.  After finding out that John’s grandfather had planted them all, they told me how he was the first to figure out how to get the trees to be successful in the area.  When you have a story like that, you can’t pass by with a camera in hand.  Photographs like these tell a story:  not only of the engagement of Kelly and John but ties that in with family history.  These are the kinds of images that stand the test of time.

Now, I’ll be honest.  I really, really glad that dock held up!  They managed carefully, but it wiggled a bit.

I adore the loving way they look at each other!

Deer Sheds on the Wall

This was the first building on the property.  While the main house was being built, the family lived here.  I loved the view through the trees.

The First Building on the Property

Now, just imagine my excitement when I saw this field of wildflowers in full bloom!  Oh, how romantic!

I can’t resist a dramatic shot to end the evening.  I asked them where the most majestic tree on the property was, and here we landed. Kelly and John, you are an amazing couple.  I thoroughly enjoyed my time with you and can’t be more excited about your wedding day!
